We'd like to introduce you to our Connoisseur's Selection. This is our bi-monthly (six times a year) program which sends you some of the finest wine produced in California. These are the "top shelf' wines, the ones you see reviewed in wine and food magazines. When you sample these wines, you'll come to realize the magic that a skilled winemaker can create when given the time and resources.

I

If you had stopped by our office one night in late January, you would have been invited to participate in the tasting of over a dozen Merlots. From this selection, we had to come up with two wines we thought representative of what a good California Merlot should taste like today. Granted, we do check the reviews in the Wine Spectator or Connoisseurs' Guide To California Wine, but the final determination of which wines are to be used rests on our personal likes and dislikes and what we think you and other members would like. We want our Merlot to have a rich, dark appearance along with a certain brightness in the glass. The nose should he there, somewhat intense but not overpowering. With our first sip we want to taste fruit flavors (plum or maybe a berry taste) but we also want assurance that the wine had spent enough time in oak barrels to soften the tannins and round out the flavor. The texture should be round and supple with moderate acidity.. .we have no use for a thin and tart Merlot. But what we look for most is that wondrously satisfying long and lingering finish...that glorious flavor that stays with you and makes you very, very happy.

Depending upon when you join our Connoisseur's Selection, you might receive the chosen two Merlots early in the year. Later, Pinot Noir would arrive for your pleasure. Then in Fall comes our favorite, Cabernet Sauvignon. But, man can't live on red wine alone (though some would like to try). Twice a year we ship white wines, either California's premier white wine, Chardonnay, or, possibly, a selection of White Meritage or a Reserve Sauvignon Blanc. And for the holidays, it's Sparkling wine, shipped just before Thanksgiving. These wines sell for around $25 per bottle (plus or minus a dollar or two), so your total cost including shipping, will be approximately $60, depending on the wines chosen and your shipping situation. Unlike the normal monthly program, we ask that payment be made prior to shipment. If you decide to use your credit card, we would automatically ship you the wine. If you choose to pay by check, we'll send you a note advising you of the cost.
